WASHINGTON -- The U. S. Food and Drug Administration is warning the public that counterfeit Viagra is not safe to use because the drug is produced by a company called Sprout Pharmaceuticals.
The FDA has received complaints from people claiming the product is counterfeit and has not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The problem is that it's sold in generic forms -- and that some counterfeiters are also producing versions of the original product.
Counterfeit versions of Viagra and Cialis are also not allowed.
"Counterfeit Viagra is not a good thing," said Dr. Sidney Wolfe, director of the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.
Counterfeit drugs are sold in the United States for $1 a tablet, $15 a pill, $20 a packet, and $40 per capsule, according to FDA.
In a letter to the FDA, Dr. Wolfe said he had no way of knowing how much of the drug he purchased from the manufacturer, Sprout Pharmaceuticals, would have gone for it. He also said the FDA could not determine if the drug was the actual active ingredient of the counterfeit.
"What I would do if I knew what I purchased from the manufacturer is a counterfeit," he wrote.
He said the FDA has taken steps to protect consumers from counterfeit versions of the drug, but he said the agency has not given up on trying to protect them.
Counterfeit pills are sold online and in mail-order pharmacies and have to be stored properly. The FDA has also warned the public that fake versions of the drug may contain pharmaceutical grade fillers that may contain toxic ingredients that may be harmful.
